CRADLE OF FILTH Singer Says They Left SONY RECORDS Of Their Own Accord
August 10, 2004In a recent interview with AllThingsMetal.net, CRADLE OF FILTH frontman Dani Filth spoke about the group's switch from the Sony label to Roadrunner for their upcoming CD, "Nymphetamine", due on September 28.
"Well, the whole Sony thing was really good and I don't regret a moment of it, but of course they weren't really suited for this kind of music," he said. "So perhaps they didn't really push it in the way in which it should have gone. We left Sony quite quickly. We managed to find a clause in the contract that enabled us to get off [Sony] shortly after we finished headlining the B stage on last year's Ozzfest. Sony was good for us, don't get me wrong. There wasn't a panic 'Aghh, we've got to jump ship!' It’s just that they were about to go through a merger with BMG and they wanted to put all their bands on a hiatus which meant extending their contracts for another 6 months from whatever album they were on. This meant we wouldn't have another album out until 2005. Roadrunner, on the other hand, is prolific in what they do. All the people who work here are into the band or other bands and what their all about. So I think it's a nice atmosphere, and you know they are going to work it, you know they are passionate about the music. That's half the battle won. They've had some good successes as well as major successes with MACHINE HEAD, FEAR FACTORY, TYPE O NEGATIVE, obviously SLIPKNOT. My personal favorite is NICKELBACK. (Laughter)"
With regards to the upcoming CD, Dani said, "We did 109 shows last year and that was the catalyst for us to be very creative, so the music came fast. We had no deadline, and it wasn't a story line like we did on 'Damnation and a Day'. It just meant that it felt very free and everything came around pretty quickly. We knew we wanted to go into the studio. We were feeling excited. The music sounds very live; it's got a passion to it. I think we pushed the envelope as far as we could in respect to working orchestrally. On the previous album we utilized like 100 extra musicians. . . . Don't get me wrong there is a small orchestra on this record and there's a lot of creepy interludes between tracks, and we've got Doug Bradley, he played Pinhead on the 'Hellraiser' series, he’s back for some chants and narration on the second part of 'Ghost in the Fog'. [But] all in all, this album is more stripped. We followed the maxim that less is more on this record. Everybody's contributed from the band and we're all into a lot of different stuff, be it black metal, death metal, hardcore, punk, or soundtracks, we've just written the album that we wanted to write. A lot of people have said that it transcends genres because you can't say 'That's particularly black metal.' 'Gilded Cunt' (mp3) is a perfect example of that. I even had some Norwegian guys say that it sounded 'groovy!' (Laughter)"
